I am not a writer. I am a thief. I am a good thief. I am not such a good writer. Anyway, I want to write about picking locks. I read a book about designing locks once. It was good. It gave me lots of ideas.<br>

Some guys make locks with angled keyholes. Always carry a bent lockpick. They will work good in these locks. I do, and I open lots of locks. Sometimes I carry copper lockpicks. Copper bends easy. That way I can bend it right there. Copper lockpicks break easy too. Be careful.<br>
<br>
Sometimes the locks have weird spings. They all spring differently, which makes picking it hard. I hold my torch close to the lock. This makes it hot. When it's hot, the springs are all the same. They don't bounce so differently any more. Be careful not to burn yourself.<br>
<br>
Some thieves can't read. If you can't read, get someone to read this book to you. It will make more sense then.

俺は作家じゃない。盗賊だ。腕の良い盗賊だ。さして腕の良くない作家だ。ともかく、ロック・ピッキング〔開錠〕の事を書きたい。一度、錠の設計を扱う本を読んだが、あれは良かった。大いにアイディアを貰った。<br>

斜めに傾いだ鍵穴を作る連中が居る。曲がったロック・ピックを何時でも持ち歩け。その手の錠で役に立つだろう。俺はそうしてるし、そうして幾つも錠を開けている。時には、銅のロック・ピックを持ち歩く。銅は曲げ易い。だから、その場に相応しく曲げられる。銅のロック・ピックは壊れ易くもある。気を付けろ。<br>

時々、変てこなバネの錠が在る。どれも違う風に跳ねて、ピッキングが難しくなる。そんな錠は、俺は松明を近づける。そうして暖める。暖まると、そんなバネも全く同じ様になる。もう余り違う様に跳ねなくなる。火傷に気を付けろ。<br>

盗賊の中には文盲も居る。お前が文盲なら、誰かしら捕まえて、この本を読んでもらえ。そうすれば、よく分かるようになる。
